Potty training...

What works...?

I'm finding potty training to be a lot more difficult than I expected.

:::sigh:::

My little girl is 2. 8mos (3 years old at the end of June).
She is genuinely interested, and has been for some time.
I can sense she's feeling dissapointed and stressed about potty training.
The last thing I want is for this to be a terrible experience for her.
I don't want to push her, or traumatize her.
I feel so inexperienced in this!

I appologize for posting here, but I wanted some perspective from other at-home moms/domestic goddesses.
Does anyone have insight to share... positive or negative?
Tecniques, books, how to set up a positive home environment, etc?
I could really use the support... so feel free to chime in on this discussion.

PS: Havn't tried rewards except for rub on tattooes whenever there is a success. (her idea)
We found that stickers and charts don't really motivate her.
Not sure how I feel about offering candy etc as a reward..

Any Help or ideas would be much appreciated!

oh bambi, I sympathize.. but my message to you is: you are doing nothing wrong!

is she is interested.. and curious,- has accidents, and phases when its working.. thats all normal. And if it all seems like its going on forever.. IT'S NOT! When she is 8 or 10 you wont even remember if it was 3 or 5 months until she got it!

My advice to you is make it as manageable for you as you can, so you dont get stresed or disappointed, because this is the biggest chunk of where her frustration comes from.

Most cultures do not reward their babies for achievement, and simple praise should be more than enough. But this is a separate issue,- and if you want your girl to feel like she will get a prize/reward every time she does something good for herself, that is your personal choice,- although I think there could be problems ahead later on when she needs to do chores or home work..

I had an array of travel potties and a potty upstars and one downstairs.. just so nobody had to run a great deal or get stressy.. but that isnt really necessary.
Be patient, one day she will 'get it', and never go back,- and you will wonder what the fuss was all about.

(my older daughter is 18, potty trained at 3, and my younger is now 6 and potty trained at 3 and a month or so. My older daughter was a single child, and not an awful lot around other toddlers.., and my younger one was in day care and everyday with many toddlers and per-schoolers...)

Try and be patient,- it Will happen!! ;-))

My advice is patience and kindness. My daughter (15 now) was pretty easy to get trained. She wet the bed a few times in the beginning but stopped after about 6 months. My second born a boy (12 now) was a nightmare. It took hin until four years old. It was so hard on me and him too because by the end I had totally lost patience with him. My third child again a boy (now 7) was real easy but he had two older siblings encouraging him.

That was a long time ago for me...but I did have a chart with stars on the bathroom door every time he tried to go on the toilet. Also he had those underoos special pants he didn't want to soil. Mine was going on three and was going to start preschool in the fall, but I could tell he was getting there. He only wet the bed like once. You can tell when they want to try and push (they do that squat thing)...that's when I'd lead him into the bathroom. I read/heard that they really feel they are losing a part of themselves when they go to the bathroom. I'd get the cutsie panties for sure. : )

Once Upon A Potty - the book AND the video....although the song on the video will dive you nuts. It'sa very matter of fact run through of the whole experience, with a positive ending...the video has a happy song at the end, Seriously - got it was a gift for the first born (the boy version) and it was such a hit we bought the girl version for #'s 2 & 3....try half.com - I'll have a look and see if I still have a copy too-are you in SF?
