Pets and household cleaniness

I have a cat and he's pretty clean. I do try to vacuum a few times a week. I wash his bedding frequently. Still when I shake out my dust mop, it's loaded with his hair. And he is coming up from the basement with 'dirty' paws from the litterbox or hacking a hairball once in a while. I know people that won't have pets because they are clean freaks. This one lady makes her son keep his dog on the deck when he visits her. So do you think pets are lots of extra work or are they worth it? You know my answer. ; ) I will say that I have to take special precautions. My guy was scratching my little sofa, so I put packing tape on the edge of it and his scratching post is near it. He also scratches the rugs and my wicker chair. He piddled on some of my record lps when we first let him become part of the family. That almost blew it for me, but he really loves me and I found the old lp that I really loved that he ruined.

I think you totally have to be a pet person to let them be who they are!! My Uncle is REALLY SUPER restrictive with his pets and it's kinda sad. I never wanted to be like that!!

I HATE the litter box paws!! That part probably drives me the most crazy. One of our girls has taken to using the couch as a scratching post and my favorite chair as a scratching post... I thought I should discipline at first, but Jack says he always hated those two items of furniture anyway and that we'll get new ones, so I just let her do whatever. We really have FEW rules over here at the castle. I know when their Dad buys his dream leather couch there will be NO more of the scratching hahaha! I've got my squirt gun I use on them.. but it's mainly for them being TOO vocal late nights or waking us up at odd hours.. that kinda thing.

Pets can be added on work totally.. but what they give you in return.. is SO worth it all!!

we have cats. i litter them until they are fixed and then out goes the litter box and they get to start going outside. its the marking of the territory by peeing in my house that sets me off!!
and eating my plants.........but i love em anyway.

double sided tape on furniture repels scratching up couches, chairs, etc....and we put a cat door in our back door that leads to our screened in porch, so the cats go out onto the porch to get to their litter box which cuts down on smell and mess and they can be outside w/o being all the way out. Our cats do go all the way out but when we had the cat door btwn outside and inside we got too many dead presents.

Ooh! Thanks for the scratching tape tip!! We're buying new furniture when we move and there's no way in heck I'd let them scratch up the new leather couch my husband wants to get! What a good idea!!! Thanks Natalie!

good luck with that....we decided long ago that we could never get leather furniture b/c of our cats...hope it works for you...you can also put scratching posts near the corners that might satisfy their need...

I have 3 cats & 1 dog in my house. I love them all. My "youngest" cat who's NOT yet declawed (the other 2 are declawed on the front) likes to scratch my NEW SUEDE COUCH on the back side. I like the double sided tape idea, but don't see how i can get enough of it to cover the WHOLE back side of my BIG SECTIONAL couch. I've already found potential she may be doing the same on 1 of the front recliners of the couch but am not sure.

              Any other suggestions here?

push the couch against a wall? :-) that's a hard one...i use a spray bottle with water and spray the cats right when i catch them in the act, then leave the bottle beside the area as a visual deterent

tried The water thing. they just sit there & let me soak em or just get out from where they are & give me the "like you really think that's gonna stop me" look. I think I need to re-apply the Bitter Apple Spray every so often...it worked when they were chewing on my plants. I just hate using it on my new couch, but what works I go with. Was hoping for a different option. Can't put the couch against the wall, btw...I have baseboard heat.

The spray is in the Dog supplies section btw in pet stores (not walmart) for dogs who lick where they shouldn't. My mom-in-law suggested it as it works for her cats.

How about getting some of the vinyl stuff or something they can't sink their claws into-for the sofa-tape it on the corners. My guy isn't declawed, he has a scratching post next to the sofa he use to try to use. It still has the shipping tape on it from 5 yrs ago where he decided to scratch. I only catch him trying to use the rugs or my wicker chair lately, then he gets yelled at. That usually works as he looks at me with very loving eyes and if I yell, he is hurt.

Hahaha Fairylite.. your post had me cracking up hahah I get "the look" too... my cats live in fear of the water bottle.. all I have to do is shake it and they scamper... hmm but for some reason I had not thought of this for the future couch problem..

I again told my husband that it's a bad idea to get the leather, but he is determined!

We now have 3 dogs and 1 cat. I vacuun the floor a few times a week--I mean I also have two kids and a husband! They're messier than the pets! But I have a wood floor in the kitchen and I always wanted that, but it gets dirty soooo quickly! And forget dust bunnies! With 3 dogs and a cat we have fur bunnies the size of soft balls! It's like tumbleweeds rolling around the kitchen! But, all of the work is totally worth it!!

Yep, my hubby would love a leather couch too! But, he's seen what the animals and kids have done to the couch we have! It's not a pretty picture!

Hahah omgosh I love it!! And I keep telling these stories to Jack and he just nods and writes it all off! Uggh! I already KNOW it's going to end badly with the leather idea.

We've hardwood over here too and I love it!! But yeah, it IS a lot of work, but totally worth it!

Glad you posted this...we have 8 indoor cats...lost so many on the street I don't want to lose these. We had a huge screened in cat house outside built and they can go there occasionally. But they are work. Have three litter boxes I clean daily. They don't scratch on our old sofa, oh no...but have ruined the arm of a new upholstered love seat in the bedroom...then I thought oh well I have more cats than friends. ha ha

I use fled meds and they don't seem to work all that well. Beatrice breaks out in a terrible rash every month or so and the vet said it was an allergy to flea bites. When I said I medicate her they said oh just try another one from them and it didn't work either. So have to get her a shot when she breaks out. Grrrr

I have one of those rubber or plastic gloves with little spikes on them that does well for grooming and they love it. I have a pet hair magnet ($10) that works great on furniture.
